This swelling band is based on bentonite, a clay mineral that expands strongly as soon as it comes into contact with water. As moisture reaches the strip, the bentonite swells to several times its own volume and forms a dense, pressure-resistant clay mass in the joint, sealing it watertight against the surrounding concrete.
Apply the band on the existing, hardened concrete floor or foundation, right where the next wall or slab will be cast or built, before pouring or masonry work starts. This is how a cold joint is sealed: the transition between two separate concrete pours, which is naturally the weakest and most water-sensitive spot. Typical applications are basements, foundations, tunnels and other underground or watertight concrete structures.
Important: the band should only start swelling after the concrete has been poured. Keep it out of prolonged rain or standing water on site, and work on a clean, dry surface just before pouring.
